Beyond Brokeback (Saturday Summer School)

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN has been the surprise hit and one of the most talked about films of 2006. This day event will explore two ideas about the film that can be approached by asking the question: “Is it a gay cowboy film?” A full screening of Peter Bogdanovich’s THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (1971) (from the novel by Larry McMurtry – a key figure in the adaptation of Brokeback Mountain) will help to establish the concept of the ‘Twilight Western’, which will then lead to consideration of the ‘queering’ of the Western. But of course, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN may simply be a ‘romance’. Come and join us and make up your own mind about the film.

It is strongly advised to have seen BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN before attending this Summer School.

Please note, there will NOT be a screening of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN at this event.

The Summer school finishes at 3.45pm
