Women directors leading the way on MUBI and Curzon

We’ve brought #HOMEhome with streaming deals from MUBI and Curzon, but with 38 top notch films it can be hard to know where to begin! Luckily we have our Head of Film, Rachel Hayward to recommend her favourite films and they just so happen to all be from great women directors. Whether you’re new to independent film or are usually first in line at HOME, here’s a good place to start.

El Despertar de las hormigas 1

The Awakening of the Ants (El despertar de las hormigas)

“I fell in love with the independent spirit at the heart of Antonella Sudassasi’s sensitive drama. Housewife Isa’s claustrophobic life in Costa Rica erupts into moments of rebellion – small and large – as she seeks her own version of being a parent, a spouse, an individual.”

Madeline’s Madeline

“While we wait for Josephine Decker’s Shirley, which received fantastic reviews at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, we can catch up on her previous titles. Madeline’s Madeline is an intriguing exploration of female friendships and mother / daughter relationships as well as experimenting with film form. Helena Howard shines in the lead role.”

System Crasher

“Nora Fingscheidt’s outstanding System Crasher is anchored by a captivating performance from Helena Zengel as Benni, a young girl with unmet emotional needs manifesting as behavioural challenges far beyond the capacity of the adults charged with taking care of her. Fingscheidt refuses to judge any of the characters here, and the film packs an almighty emotional punch.”

We have been overwhelmed by the love and support we’ve received since announcing our temporary closure due to the coronavirus crisis. This is a difficult time, and we appreciate everyone who has asked how they can help.
