Mothers Who Make: Thank You

Our latest Mothers Who Make blog reflects on all the non-artistic benefits of being part of a collective of creatives who are each on a similar journey and path. Read Anna Swailes blog below to find out more…

Ah, Phew!

The relief that is felt as I walk to Mothers Who Make, Manchester. The talking circle for Mothers who are also creatives. The women who make you feel so safe, there are at least two ‘criers’ per session – one of them usually being me.

The talking circle that is never the same and yet consistent in its support, honesty and vital feedback on art working, parenting, and the busy combination of juggling creativity, mothering, and working.

I’ve been attending for a few months, the co-facilitator’s smile is enough to make you feel all glowing and gooey about the wonderful Mothers Who Make Manchester. It’s given me confidence in setting up my own print business, saying ‘no’ to other projects, saying ‘yes’ to some projects. The group has been a fusion of collaborations, friendships and an introduction to other disciplines other than visual arts.

Between discussing art work, performing arts, embroidery, 3-D working, sculpting and physical theatre we also sound out feelings about the mundane mothering tasks, the frightening world that is unfolding around us. How do you channel creativity and being a parent in the light of political uncertainty, terrorist attacks and potty training?

So not really a blog, more a thank you Mothers Who Make for allowing me to be friend, facilitator, appraiser, creator, print maker, artist, and Mother, and I promise I will try harder to get my little boy to wear trousers in public.
