Live theatre on your cinema screen

“I grew up in Manchester in the 60s. If I had been able to see Olivier’s National Theatre at my local cinema, I would have gone all of the time.” Nicholas Hytner

So we’ve proved over the last 25 years we can do film and art….now we’re turning our hand to theatre. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking initiative to broadcast the best of British theatre to cinemas. The first season was a massive hit with audiences around the world, with the acclaimed production of Phèdre starring Helen Mirren, seen by over 165,000 people on 320 screens in 22 countries – that’s pretty impressive.

So from this December, National Theatre Live comes to Cornerhouse. We will be screening an exciting programme of 5 performances filmed live in high definition and broadcast via satellite to Cinema 1. First up is Hamlet directed by Nicholas Hytner on the 9th December and its already had some great reviews…

‘Tremendous. Rory Kinnear’s performance is superb in its resonance and intelligence. This is a Hamlet for now.’ The Times

‘Rory Kinnear excels. An evening to admire and cherish.’ Guardian

‘A chilling production that demands to be seen.’ Independent

Then you’ve got the likes of Donmar Warehouse’s King Lear, the unique hybrid of dance, theatre and music that is Fela!, Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard and our very own patron Danny Boyle’s thrilling new production of Frankenstein.

Tickets go on sale to the general public this Fri 29th Oct. However if you are a Cornerhouse member you can book your ticket for the first three performances (Hamlet, Fela! and King Lear) today by calling our Box Office on 0161 200 1500.
