At Cornerhouse we are delighted to be selling Katie Paterson’s Earth-Moon-Earth book and CD. It is priced at £10.00 and you can purchase copies exclusively in our Ground Floor Bookshop. There is, of course, also a sample copy in our Galleries Foyer that you can have a browse-through, to wet your appetite.
Katie Paterson is one of four artists exhibiting in our new group exhibition Constellations and Earth-Moon-Earth is one of two artworks of Katie’s featured. You can experience her beautiful, minimalist E-M-E installation in gallery 3.
E.M.E is a form of radio transmission whereby messages are sent in Morse-code from earth, reflected from the surface of the moon, and then received back on earth. The moon reflects only part of the information back – some is absorbed by its shadows, ‘lost’ in its craters.
For this work, Katie has translated Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata into Morse-code and sent it to the moon via E.M.E. Returning to earth ‘fragmented’ by the moon’s surface, it has been re-translated into a new score, the missing notes becoming intervals and rests. The sonata was sent and received, bar-by-bar in ten sections.
