On this month’s HOME Film Podcast we discuss the new releases Titane, There is no Evil and Lola and the Sea with special guests Dr Sorcha Ní Fhlainn and Nadia Ahmed. Plus, we have some exclusive clips from the upcoming film House of Gucci starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, releasing today, Fri 26 Nov, and Karen is joined by acclaimed choreographer Maria Torres (Enchanted, Swing, In the Heights) to discuss Steven Spielberg’s newest film West Side Story, an adaptation of the hit broadway classic.

We also spoke to co-curator Sorcha about our upcoming festive film season Merry 80s Christmas (you heard that right) and why these 80s classics get us full of festive cheer (even Nightmare on Elm Street!). HOME Director of Film & Culture Jason Wood joins us to discuss our special one-off screening of Nadja in 35mm print, with an introduction from Jason himself and Geoffrey M. Badger, MA Curation at the National Film and Television School.

We also discuss everyone’s top film picks of 2021 in what has been, against all odds, a fantastic year for cinema.

Karen Gabay is a TV producer, podcast host & producer, exhibition curator, award winning film maker and radio presenter of one of the BBC’s longest running radio shows, The People which airs weekly on BBC Radio Manchester. Reporting and producing features on music, the arts, film, social affairs and sport for local & network radio. Karen has a broad portfolio. Maria Torres

Maria Torres is an acclaimed choreographer and director with extensive experience in theater, film, and television, with a background in performance.

As a performer, Maria graced both the Broadway stage and the silver screen, in such distinguished projects as the film Dance with Me starring Vanessa Williams, the hit six-time Tony nominated Broadway musical Swing!, Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth at the Public Theater, and of course gracing the stage at the legendary Radio City Music Hall.

Maria is proud to have worked with directors like Jerry Zaks, Diane Paulus, and Sergio Trujillo.

Behind the scenes, Maria is a two-­time Cleo Award winner for her choreography and has worked with producers and directors at MTV, NBC, HBO, BBC and Walt Disney. Favorite choreography credits include: Lead Choreographer for Four Guys Named Jose (Lucille Lortel and Carbonelle award nominated for Best Choreography; produced by Enrique Iglesias), Associate Choreographer for the Oscar nominated film Enchanted, Contributing Choreographer and lead performer in Broadway’s Swing, and Associate Choreographer on showcase for Tony award winning In The Heights.

As guest choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance, Maria won two Choreography Festival Awards for her original pieces. As a director, Maria brings to life dance, theater, and musical acts, working with worldwide music icons like Don Omar and Enrique Iglesias, directing individual pieces like the finale number of the internationally-televised Latin Billboard Awards, and co-­conceiving, choreographing and directing full length works including the Magic Of Salsa Kingdom and the Off-­Broadway hit Latin Heat.

Jason Wood

Creative Director: Film & Culture at HOME, Visiting Professor at MMU and Visiting Professor at University of Salford.

Jason Wood has over twenty years of experience in the UK film industry and a strong affiliation with the cultural and independent sector. Before working at HOME, he was the Programming Manager at Picturehouse, Director of Programming at Curzon Cinemas, and also took a lead role in acquisitions for Artificial Eye. Pina, Ivul, The Deep Blue Sea, Archipelago and The Duke of Burgundy are just some of the films he has been partly responsible for bringing to UK screens. He has curated retrospectives of Peter Whitehead, Atom Egoyan, Wim Wenders, Chris Petit, Nicolas Roeg and Mexican Cinema, has served as a jury member for the London Film Festival, and has worked on the board of CINECITY Film Festival, Brighton. He is the co-director of three documentary features and the author of 10 published works on cinema. His writing has also appeared in the Guardian, Sight and Sound, Vertigo and SoFilm. Jason is also Professor of Film at Manchester Metropolitan University.
