We’re committed to supporting our environment

Here at HOME we’re committed to supporting our environment and inspiring others to do the same. We work together to reduce our carbon impact and we’re dedicated to understanding and improving our activities and sharing our knowledge with you. Our efforts today help to support and strengthen a creative green future for tomorrow.

We work closely with our partners Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to reduce congestion on Manchester’s roads through low-pollution and low-carbon travel choices and hold staff bike training and maintenance sessions, have a cycle2work scheme and take lunchtime walks for staff well-being. We have Skype stations for video meetings, choose trains over planes for long-distance travel and have a bike pool for getting to meetings around the city. We’re really proud of our efforts and we’ve been recognised with a Gold rating in TfGM’s brand new Travel Choices Awards. With secure bike stands outside, newly-improved cycle networks around the city centre, and with handy access to buses, trams and trains, it’s never been easier to travel sustainably – in fact 89% of all visits to HOME in 2016-17 were made using low-carbon and low-pollution transport!

It’s not just travel, our building is sustainable too. We use a 100% renewable electricity provider and our efficient building technology systems monitor energy usage and reduce unnecessary waste. Our zero-to-landfill policy ensures that none of our rubbish ends up on the dump. As Manchester Arts Sustainability Team (MAST) members we’re part of a group of 30 arts and cultural organisations leading the way in our commitment to working together to make positive change, reducing our carbon footprint year on year. We’re also the first arts venue in the world to train all of our staff in Carbon Literacy. Through film screenings and workshops we’ve learned about the impact of our choices on the environment, pledged actions that will have meaningful change and we’re sharing our awareness. Our Environmental and Sustainability Group work together to inspire the whole team – this year they’ve successfully raised funds to install rooftop honeybee hives, so there’ll soon be even more of a buzz about the place!

We love growing our community and getting you involved. We hosted Greater Manchester Walking Festival events and we’ve supported the first ever National Clean Air Day with partners TfGM and Jacobs. On 5 Jul we’re holding a special showcase and prize-giving event with pupils from Greater Manchester schools presenting their own ‘solution to pollution’ campaign adverts on our big cinema screen!

Plan your route to us with TFGM’s journey planner, approach any of our staff with your sustainability questions, look out for recycling bins around the building, and check out the locally-sourced food and drink in the bar and restaurant – our sustainable HOME is yours too.
