We actively encourage our staff and visitors to travel to and from HOME sustainably. At First Street we are ideally located to be reached by public transport, cycling, or on foot.
Located just off the Oxford Road corridor, it is now even easier to reach HOME without a car. Improved cycle routes and Dutch-style bike lanes ensure a smooth journey, and we have Sheffield stands available to secure your bike on site, with many more located in the surrounding area.
We operate a Sustainable Travel Policy and work with TfGM (Transport for Greater Manchester) Travel Choices to advocate best practice for staff travel. In March 2017 we were awarded Gold in TfGM’s inaugural Travel Choices Accreditation scheme in recognition of our efforts and commitments to help reduce congestion, enhance the health and wellbeing of our staff, and improve air quality in Greater Manchester.
We have a number of different measures in place to make sustainable workplace travel easy and effective. Lockers and showers were installed in our new building to encourage staff to walk or cycle to work, and bike maintenance, secure marking and training workshops are held regularly to sustain and support green travel choices. A bike pool scheme allows staff to cycle when making local journeys for work, and we conduct distance meetings using video conferencing or Skype. We actively encourage long-distance travel by train, and European travel with Eurostar.
Surveying how our staff travel to work allows us to compare, improve and review our travel choices to ensure improved sustainable practices both within and beyond our organisation, and each staff member receives a personalised travel pack to help them with their journeys. As a result of our 2017 Travel Choices day our staff have introduced new initiatives and activities including weekly lunchtime walks exploring different routes, landmarks and locations around HOME and the city centre. Twice weekly staff yoga sessions also improve health and encourage wellbeing in the workplace.
