Leadership

We recognise both the imperative and the opportunity in responding to the global challenges of climate change and securing environmental sustainability, acknowledging that rapid and urgent action is needed across all sectors of society.

We’re proud to hold 4 stars in Creative Green! Audited by Julie’s Bicycle, this is the only sector-specific environmental sustainability certification, and we’re part of a global creative climate community leading the way in positive action that influences and drives change.

Our Environmental and Sustainability group comprises staff members from across the organisation, who are dedicated to bringing a variety of environmental innovations and practices to HOME, driving change, developing initiatives and inspiring both individual action and collective change. We are planning ahead in our pledge to help to secure a sustainable future. By further raising awareness of our efforts towards practical, creative and lasting sustainability actions, we are continually working to grow our green community.

We also a dynamic member of MAST (Manchester Arts Sustainability Team) – recognised by Arts Council England as ‘one of the city’s most successful examples of environmental improvements and civic engagement on climate change’. As part of MAST we share a passion to make environmental sustainability intrinsic to the plans and aspirations of arts and creative industries across Manchester. We continue to work towards MAST’s energy emission reduction targets and to take advantage of the training, tools and resources available through Julie’s Bicycle to manage and reduce energy and environmental impacts. The group represents the cultural sector of Manchester actively supporting the work of Manchester Climate Change Agency and its commitment to make Manchester a zero carbon city by 2038. URBACT, URBACT, the EU’s learning and exchange programme for cities, awarded MAST the Good Practice label, celebrating the practical and collaborative solutions made to integrate sustainable and environmental commitments in our city. MAST won the Promotion of Environmental Sustainability accolade at the inaugural Manchester Culture Awards. This recognition is a testament to the unique collaborative network that we’ve established across the cultural sector in the city, and our collective commitment to driving change, lowering our carbon impact, and inspiring others to do the same.

We’ve established Sustainability 1st, a side-wide initiative formed of members from organisations, businesses and site management across First Street. Our shared ambitions align and engage with Zero Carbon Manchester 2038 strategy and we are working collaboratively with our neighbours to be the change we want to see – sharing our skills and knowledge and leading by example.

We strive to share our actions and learning across the cultural sector and beyond! We collaborate and engage with arts organisations, artists and suppliers in Greater Manchester and we go beyond our regional borders both nationally and internationally to engage others and widen the conversation. Environmental sustainability is both a local and a global issue that impacts us all, so we use our creative platform to invite change.

We produce a twice-yearly Green Newsletter to share with our team and our stakeholders, and we’re using our digital platforms to engage our audiences in the climate conversation. Use #SustainableHOME to get involved.
