Theatre Season Brochure Oct 15 – Mar 16

Since April, we have welcomed thousands of people through our doors and have presented the work of some of the best companies, directors and playwrights working today.

In our new theatre season, we cross 2,500 years to present the work of playwrights who defined the history of theatre, and invite highly original theatre makers to tell stories in their own unique style.

The Oresteia, Aeschylus’ epic of murder and revenge, is brought to life with 56 local volunteers playing the chorus, the voice of the city. The Young Vic’s Macbeth – starring the luminous Anna Maxwell Martin – fuses contemporary dance with Shakespeare’s iconic prose.

France’s most celebrated directorial talent, Philippe Quesne, brings his international hit La Mélancolie des Dragons to our stage for its UK premiere. Like a graphic novel burst into life, 1927 present Golem, fresh for its sell out run in the West End.

Choreographer Hofesh Shechter returns with his completed trilogy barbarians, and Complicite’s Simon McBurney presents his Edinburgh sensation The Encounter, which features ground-breaking audio technology and storytelling wizardry.

In the new year, we celebrate Greater Manchester’s most exciting theatre companies and performers with PUSH Festival (formally Re:play), and our site-specific HOME from HOME strand continues with Streetwise Opera’s The Passion and associate company Quarantine’s Summer. Autumn. Winter. Spring.

As Christmas approaches, we invite all ages to see the UK Premiere of Inkheart, an adaptation of Cornelia Funke’s bestselling young adult novel. Join us on a thrilling adventure filled with charm and wit, and celebrate the power of stories, ideas and the imagination.
