Albert Finney was once again Oscar nominated for his lead role in Huston’s adaptation of Malcolm Lowry’s acclaimed semi-autobiographical 1947 novel. Set at the end of he 1930s as the world teeters on the verge of momentous change, Under the Volcano follows alcoholic diplomat Geoffry Firmin during the Mexican Day of the Dead. With his nuanced performance Finney wonderfully captures the essence of Firmin’s internal despair.
