The Connection

Directed by Shirley Clarke

A cornerstone of American independent cinema (and a sizeable influence on Cassavetes), Shirley Clarke’s portrait of addiction amongst a group of New York jazz musicians was acclaimed as a masterpiece when it debuted at Cannes but then largely withdrawn from circulation for its frank depiction of drug taking. Shot in black and white by Arthur J Ornitz, the film features Freddie Redd and Jackie McLean.
