On the Silver Globe

Directed by Andrzej Żuławski

Last year saw Poland’s perpetual enfant terrible, Andrzej Żuławski, return to filmmaking with Cosmos. Perhaps best known for his 1981 marital horror Possession, Żuławski refused to be pigeonholed, and he produced science fiction, musical and costume drama-based films. Alongside Cosmos, we will screen this new restoration of one of Żuławski most operatic films: the sci-fi epic On the Silver Globe.

Based on the sci-fi trilogy by Andrzej Żuławski’s great uncle, this is both a terrifying video diary of the moon’s colonisation and a space opera about an astronaut mistaken for the messiah. Featuring heretics impaled on spikes, a subterranean orgy and (years before Mad Max) a finned Cadillac screaming across a desert wasteland, this is the perfect Star Wars antidote.
