Against the background of rural Germany in the middle of the 19th century when whole villages suffering from famine and poverty emigrated to faraway South America, Edgar Reitz tells a dramatic family and love story that centers on two brothers who are forced to choose between leaving and staying. A valuable addition to Reitz’s internationally renowned Heimat project, Home From Home is a compelling portrait of a time of flux and change. Originally shown at the Venice Biennale, the film has been rapturously received and now finally arrives to enthrall and engage UK audiences. The writing, direction and performances are absolutely first-rate and if this does down bring the curtain down on the director’s Heimat series it is a more than fitting conclusion.
