This study day will address the theme of Francophonie, using Monsieur Lazhar, a film from Quebec, as the focus. Students will learn about French as it is currently spoken in Quebec and will look at differences in vocabulary. Students will also be introduced to small budget auteur cinema using this box office success as a case study. Through group discussion and language exercises students will address the film’s main themes: childhood; relationships between adults and children; immigration and education.

Led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Following the sudden and traumatic death of a teacher, Algerian immigrant Bachir Lazhar is hired to work as a supply teacher in a Quebec school. Monsieur Lazhar helps the kids come to term with their loss, whilst recovering from his own personal tragedy. This Oscar-nominated film presents his story with emotion, deftly avoiding over sentimentality.
