Feature Expanded is a unique training programme examining the methodologies, tools and skills needed for filmmakers with a background in visual arts to develop and produce feature films.
It provides a series of unique and tailored activities that respond to the growing trend of visual artists bringing new vision and strong innovation to feature film production. This new generation of filmmakers is expanding the terrain of the traditional audiovisual industry by bringing new audiences, partnerships and structures together (including museums and cultural centres) to exploit film production and distribution internationally.
Spanning six months and two locations, the programme combines masterclasses, case studies, workshops, screenings, one-to-one meetings and pitching sessions for directors who are developing their first feature film. Participants will gain essential new skills and the expertise needed to advance their early stage feature film projects for theatrical distribution and exhibition. This is the first specifically designed course for directors and producers from a visual art background who are developing a feature film.
The programme takes the form of two residential workshops in Manchester and Florence. Between these, participants work on project development, respond to set tasks and use online consultancy for specific topics. After this, participants are directed to collaborations with relevant festivals, markets and other partners.
Training is peer-led by experts who currently work in this field and have several feature film credits. The course covers script development, non-script based production, project pitching, co-commissioning and financing, working with actors and participants, distribution and exhibition involving digital platforms. It also includes several presentations and screenings of feature film case studies produced and directed by visual artists.
Participating directors will be brought together on specific tasks to stimulate future collaboration and networking within the group.
