Calling all young theatre critics

Aged between 14-18 and studying at school, college or university in Greater Manchester? Fancy yourself as a writer or theatre critic? Then we’ve got a competition for you!

We’re looking for a young writer to submit a review of our forthcoming production of Romeo and Juliet at Victoria Baths, and interview the cast which will be published right here, on our website, and on arts and culture website Northern Soul.

We’re inviting entrants from the Greater Manchester boroughs to submit a review of something they’ve seen, read or watched over the summer – it could be a book, film, TV programme, theatre, exhibition, or an event – anything that inspires you to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard!

The winner will become our official young reviewer for Romeo and Juliet. We will provide the winner with a pair of tickets to a matinee performance in September, and also arrange an interview with Alex Felton and Sara Vickers, the actors playing Romeo and Juliet.

Not only that, we will arrange a mentoring session for the winner with leading North West journalist Helen Nugent, founder and editor of Northern Soul. Helen is a former journalist at The Times and writes for The Guardian, The Mail on Sunday and The Independent.

Want to apply?

  • Submit a piece of written work no more than 300 words
  • Provide your contact telephone number and email address
  • Please state your age and where you go to school, college or university

All entries are to be emailed to alex.bond@homemcr.org by the closing date of Fri 12 September at 17:00.

The submissions will be judged by our Head of Engagement, Marisa Draper; our Director of Marketing and Communications, Clare Sydney; and Helen Nugent.

Full terms and conditions of the competition can be found here.

Good luck!
