Bienvenidos a ¡Viva! – bigger, bolder and more vibrant than ever

For its 22nd edition, ¡Viva! returns with a 18 day, venue-wide celebration of Spanish and Latin American culture. For the first time, we bring you a specially selected programme of the most exciting film, theatre and art from across the Spanish-speaking world…

Expect international theatre performances including brand new commissions from Catalan theatre makers ATRESBANDES and Little Soldier, before we head to Cuba for a showcase of work by award-winning playwright Abel González Melo.

The packed film programme features a world-class line-up, with UK premieres and sneak previews from new and established directors from Spain, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. Be sure not to miss Álex de la Iglesia’s Mi Gran noche, and check out our four recent Argentinian classics featuring prolific actor Ricardo Darín, in honour of his new film Truman. Another sure hit will be our tribute to local heroine Leonora Carrington, a Lancashire-born surrealist artist who made her home in Mexico, with an introduced screening of the 1973 risqué horror film The Mansion of Madness.

In 2015, Cornerhouse closed its doors for the final time, bidding farewell to the venue in truly spectacular style with a celebratory, sold-out performance by Panamanian artist Humberto Vélez, The Storming. As part of ¡Viva! 2016, you will be able to enjoy The Storming Reunion, with a Latin party for everyone on Sat 23 April. Keep your eyes peeled on our website for full details coming soon.

Visual art will also present the launch of online experimental moving image platform Apología /Antología, which contains 250 freely accessible works of experimental moving image by Spanish artists and filmmakers.

Last but not least, it wouldn’t be a festival without food and drink. So as well as a packed programme of films and shows, look out for some Latin American and Iberian twists to our menus throughout April, including montaditos and pinchos served from our bars, as well as some Spanish-inspired cocktails. There may even be a sneaky sangria to hand…

Enjoy with some impromptu musical performances and special surprises – and be ready to really soak up the festival atmosphere right here at HOME.

¡Viva! runs between Thu 7 – Sun 24 April. Book tickets and find out more here.
