5 Tips For Surviving The Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe kicks off this weekend, sending thousands of art, comedy and theatre enthusiasts flocking to the picturesque Scottish city. First time there? Don’t fret. Our Senior Theatre Producer Kevin Jamieson has compiled a list of handy tips for surviving your inaugural Fringe trip…

Wear Sensible Shoes

There’s a lot of walking between venues at the Fringe and it always feels like Edinburgh is one of the hilliest cities in the world. Coupled that with the fact that you’ll be stood in queues a lot means it’s a must that you wear shoes that you feel comfortable in. Plus, the weather is very changeable (all the seasons in one day, sometimes) so make sure you pack clothes for all weather types.

Talk To People

Whether it’s over a drink or while you’re stuck in a queue, talking to other audience members is the best way to get some great hints and tips on shows you can’t miss. It sounds simple but you’re guaranteed to always hear about some great productions that you don’t even have on your radar. So go on, be sociable.

Take a Risk

This year at the Fringe there are 3,269 productions at 294 venues. It goes without saying that there’s a lot on, so take a risk. See something that you might not necessarily have booked for – you may well end up seeing something amazing.

Fuel Up

Remember to eat, too. It’s easy to get carried away seeing shows and the sights and suddenly realise that you haven’t eaten in seven hours. Make time to for food (Mother India on Infirmary Street is a personal favourite) and/or drink in the many Fringe hubs such as Summerhall, Pleasance Courtyard etc.

Hang About

Try and plan multiple shows in one venue. Rather than rushing around Edinburgh finding shows and venues, try and plan multiple shows at the same venue on the same day. This means you arrive less sweaty and maximise time for that eating and drinking. It’s a win-win scenario.
