Tomorrow, we launch our new group exhibition to Behind The Sun with a preview event featuring a host of Brazilian themed treats. On the fence about heading down? Here’s five reasons why you should…
Live Music
Kicking off the festivities will be Manc musicians The Riot Jazz Brass Band who will be playing an hour long set right here at Tony Wilson Place. This nine-piece brass act cite the likes of New Orleans’ Hot 8 Brass Band and Oregon’s Youngblood Brass Band as influences and combine a mixture of hip-hop samples and re-interpreted dubstep with aggro-jazz and some funked-up favourites to form their sound. You may have seen them across the city and at festivals across the UK, making this special home-town show unmissable.
Food
Hungry? When 5pm on Friday rolls around, chances are you will be. Why not join us for our Behind The Sun celebrations and grab a bite to eat while you’re at it? Weather permitting, our Brazilian take over of the First Street plaza will include an outdoor BBQ, offering attendees a selection of tasty treats. Expect classic posh lamb kebabs hot off the grill, with a falafel option for the non-meat eaters. Oh, and don’t fret – They’ll be cheeseburgers on offer too. It’d hardly be a BBQ without them.
Cocktails
All this partying is guaranteed to make you thirsty. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Head to our bar to find a selection of colourful cocktails and Brazilian drinks. The star of the show will be our Caipirinhas, the official national cocktail of Brazil, consisting of popular local spirit Cachaça, lime and sugar, all topped off with a scattering of crushed ice. We’ll also have some visiting beers to provide a real cultural kick, look out for bottles of Brahma and Palma Louca behind the bar. All this in addition to our usual stock of craft cans and delicious drafts? We spoil you lot.
DJs
As if all this food, drink and live music weren’t enough, once our Behind The Sun gallery preview comes to a close we’ll be joined by tune turner DJ Yatie to take us into the evening. Guaranteed to get you moving, DJ Yatie brings with her a wide selection of songs to suit all tastes with a little Brazilian flair thrown in for good measure. So grab another Caipirinha and head to our ground floor bar. Dancing shoes recommended.
Gallery
Last but certainly not least, there’s the gallery itself. As our latest group exhibition, Behind The Sun invites five winners of Brazil’s largest contemporary art prize to reflect upon and challenge the social preconceptions of their home country. Expect portraits, installations, videos and brand new work from the likes of Gê Orthof, Berna Reale, Nicolas Robbio, Grupo EmpreZa and Virginia de Medeiros. The gallery will be available to preview from 18.00 to 21.00, so don’t miss your chance to be the first to experience this exciting new collection of work.
